Personal Injury News: £3m compensation payout for emergency call out
A grandmother has been awarded a payout of more than £3m in compensation after a police vehicle responding to an emergency call out struck her. Linda Donaldson was left brain damaged following the incident which happened whilst she was using a pelican crossing.

The police officer, Philip Wilkinson, was overtaking parked vehicles in the Walker area of Newcastle on Welbeck Road when his car collided with the mother-of-three causing her to suffer from a blood clot on the brain, a broken collarbone and pelvis and internal bleeding and was in a coma for over six months.

The police officer was later charged with dangerous driving at Newcastle Crown Court and received a six-month suspended prison sentence and was forced to resign from Northumbria Police.

Mrs Donaldson is now confined to a wheelchair and requires constant 24-hour care which forced Mr Donaldson to lodge a claim with the High Court in London for £3.7m, although the force has now settled out of court.

When speaking with the press, Mr Donaldson has declined to discuss the settlement, which is understood to be at least £2m, together with £1m already paid by Northumbria Police.

Mr Donaldson said: "This money is not for me or the rest of the family. It will be spent on keeping Linda comfortable for the rest of her life and getting her the best care available.
"It's been a long, hard fight and I feel a lot of weight has fallen off my shoulders now I know she is set. We are making the best of a bad job."

Except to confirm the two parties had agreed the grounds for a final settlement, Northumbria Police has declined to comment.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has recorded the deaths of 32 people killed by police cars last year.

The Police Federation recently stated that police forces were not properly funding police driver training.

Mr Donaldson, as part of his campaign for tighter restrictions on police pursuits, wants black boxes to be fitted to all police vehicles which would allow for the driver's actions to be recorded.
