Personal Injury News: Expensive Police Compensation Bill
In the last ten years, Sussex Police has had to pay out over £1m in compensation for mistakes made by its officers. Following court claims of negligence, racial discrimination and unlawful arrest, 528 payments totalling a whopping £1,019,080 have been paid.

In 2004, this force paid out just under £250,000 with more than half of this going to victims of personal injury including what is thought to be the single largest ever one-off payment to an individual in the UK. £42,500 was paid to a youth who received a bite from a police dog whilst it was giving chase to the fleeing youth. The police dog also had to be destroyed.

A spokesperson for the force stated that it did not make a difference if the complainant was a convicted criminal or not, each claim is treated in exactly the same way.

Many believe this compensation is justified. A spokesman for Victim Support in Sussex said "Where there has been a proven case of wrong doing among the police then it is right that victims receive compensation, and that can include, where suitable, large payments."
