Personal Injury News: GP fails to spot pneumonia
NHS chiefs have apologised to a patient after doctors failed to diagnose pneumonia following eight consultations in six weeks. The man who suffers with Down’s Syndrome and epilepsy required a chest operation at St John's Hospital in Livingston.

The patient’s carer complained about the care provided by NHS Lothian’s out-of-hours service and Scotland’s public service watchdog upheld the complaint.

One doctor at this man's GP practice should have examined his chest six days before the eventual diagnosis ruled Professor Alice Brown for the Ombudsman. Clinical director of unscheduled care services, Marion Storrie, said, “NHS Lothian always takes any complaints made very seriously and we are apologising to [the patient's carer]. We accept the recommendations made in this report and will ensure that the appropriate action is taken.”

Part of the complaint lodged by the carer stated that her belief was that doctors should take more notice of the clinical tests in patients with learning disabilities, as they are not always able to fully describe their symptoms.
