Personal Injury News: Millions in compensation paid to prisoners
The latest figures show that the Prison Service paid £2.5m in compensation to prisoners in England and Wales last year as details about payments were released under the Freedom of Information Act.

Inmates in 94 prisons were compensated over claims of abuse, assault, medical negligence and unlawful detention and just two jails, Wormwood Scrubs, in London, and Northallerton Young Offenders Institution, in North Yorkshire, were responsible for almost half of the total.

The figures revealed the biggest single out-of-court payments were £472,000 for one claim paid to a prisoner at Wormwood Scrubs and £575,000 which was made to a young, male prisoner in Northallerton Young Offenders Institution who had apparently attempted suicide. Whilst it has not been revealed why these two payments were made, they were included in a category of injury claims for official misconduct and breaches of human rights.

The figures also included £750,000 that was paid to almost 200 heroin addicts whose treatment was withdrawn or cut short while they were in prison. A High Court judge approved these damages last November, following their claims that the practice amounted to an assault and breach of human rights.
