Personal Injury News: Nurse compensated following assaults
A staff nurse has been awarded compensation of £21,500 following two assaults by the same patient sustaining injuries to her nose and hand.

The man attacked Lucia Johnson, a staff nurse at Broadmoor Hospital, the high security psychiatric hospital, in Berkshire, in December 2002 and again July 2003. Mrs Johnson was attacked with three other colleagues after entering the patient’s room.

A spokesperson for the West London Mental Health NHS Trust said that an award of compensation had been agreed through the NHS Litigation Authority.

The Trust confirmed the attacks in a statement saying “We take the safety and security of our staff very seriously and all patients are risk assessed before they are admitted to Broadmoor Hospital. As a result, various measures are taken to mitigate against violent incidents, but on occasion these do occur in mental health services.”

The regional officer for UNISON, Eddie Jaggers, said “Although searches had been regularly carried out in his room, the appropriate action was not taken.”
