Personal Injury News: Police vehicle accidents cost taxpayer thousands
It has been revealed, under the Freedom of Information Act, that collisions involving police cars are costing the taxpayer hundreds of thousands of pounds each year in compensation payments according to figures made available to the Yorkshire Post.

Thousands have been paid out across the country in personal injury claims and for damage to property following road accidents in which, in many cases, police forces admitted responsibility, leading to many officers being disciplined for poor driving.

With a report due out next month, the Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating the causes of police-related traffic accidents. The IPCC has been investigating the 130 incidents in the UK over a two-and-a-half year period that resulted in 59 deaths and 138 serious injuries.

An IPCC spokesman said that any lessons, which could be identified within their findings, would be passed to police forces.

Nationally, 48 fatalities as a result of police-related traffic accidents in 2005-6 were recorded, a rise of four on the previous year.

Road safety campaigners have now called for close monitoring of police-related crashes and their causes.
