| RNID report deafness risk to clubbers Following a recent survey by the Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID), they are now requesting action by the government as the survey revealed a large number of young partygoers are being exposed to dangerously high noise levels. The ‘Like it Loud?’ report revealed that 90% of revellers have experienced signs of hearing damage after a night out and others have reported permanent damage following repeated exposure to dangerously high noise levels, yet do nothing to prevent it. In light of these findings, the charity is appealing to the government to set a recommended noise exposure level for people attending music venues and also to educate young people about loud music to enable them to take more responsibility for their exposure. The chief executive of RNID, Dr John Low, believes that people should be familiar with the message about loud music exposure saying “The lack of guidance on loud music means this generation of music-lovers could be facing a hearing loss time bomb. With regular exposure to music at high volumes in clubs, gigs and bars, it is only too easy to clock up noise doses that could damage their hearing forever”. The survey’s revelations come ahead of the implementation of regulation that requires music venues to make earplugs available to employees whilst industrial employers are currently obliged to notify, and provide hearing protection, to staff who are to be exposed to noise levels over 85 decibels. Once levels rise above 90 decibels, employers are required to ensure that staff are wearing hearing protection.
